3 things to check on your bike before your first spring ride

11. 03. 2026

The days are getting longer, temperatures are rising, and the cycling season is just around the corner. If you properly cleaned and stored your bike for the winter, now is the perfect time for a quick check before heading back on the road. After a longer winter break, taking a few minutes to inspect your bike is always a good idea – it helps ensure a safer ride, smoother performance, and a great start to the new season.

Here are three key things you should check before your first spring ride.

1. Chain and Drivetrain

The chain is the heart of your bike and after months of inactivity it usually needs a bit of attention. Start by cleaning it thoroughly - a bucket of water, a quality bike cleaner and a suitable brush are usually enough. Once the chain is clean and dry, apply a proper bike lubricant.

For spring conditions, when roads and trails are often still wet, we recommend using a wet lubricant or an all-weather chain lube. This helps ensure smoother pedaling and better protection for the chain.

After lubricating the chain, also check the chain tension and the condition of the drivetrain components. Test the front and rear derailleurs as well - shifting should be smooth, quiet and precise. If you notice any issues, the derailleur may need fine adjustment, which you can do yourself or leave to professionals at a bike service shop.

2. Brakes

Brakes are one of the most important safety components on any bike. Riding in winter conditions, mud or sand can accelerate the wear of brake pads, so it’s important to inspect them before the season begins. If they are worn out, replace them in time.

When testing the brakes, follow a simple rule: you should feel clear resistance when braking, and the brake levers should stop before reaching the handlebars. Also check the condition of the brake cables and replace them if you notice any damage. Reliable brakes are essential for safe riding.

3. Tyres and Rims

Before your first ride, also inspect the condition of your tyres and rims. If the tyres are not excessively worn, inflate them to the recommended pressure using a pump with a pressure gauge. Proper tyre pressure improves grip, stability and overall riding comfort.

If you ride a tubeless setup, now is a good time to add fresh sealant. In spring conditions, when roads and trails may still be wet or slippery, slightly wider tyres can also be a good choice, as they allow lower pressure and provide better traction.

To check the rims, simply lift the bike and spin the wheel. Listen for any rubbing sounds and observe whether the rim spins evenly. If you notice wobbling or loose spokes, tighten them with a spoke wrench or visit a bike service shop.

Final tip

In addition to these three checks, take a minute to quickly inspect the bolts on the stem, seatpost and handlebars - they can loosen slightly over time. With a simple multitool you can tighten them in seconds.

Don’t forget about your bike lights as well. A white front light and a red rear light are essential for visibility and safety, especially in low-light conditions.

A well-prepared bike means safer, smoother and more enjoyable rides. Have a great and active cycling season!
